while australia may yield beauty in many forms there are few things that can compete with beaches & wildlife, but then i found this gent. i felt compelled to finally make use of my Shazam phone application when i heard Daniel Merriweather playing in a store last year. i feel like he should be one of the more well known names in our part of the world, but i do tend to favor the smooth tastes of soul, rhythm/blues, & anything laced with old school class. in addition to releasing the Love & War album in June of 2009, Merriweather has also collaborated with a slew of respected artists. preview his debut album and his videos below. (the first features Wale & the second being a remix of the classic "Stop Me" with Mark Ronson). sounds to me like it might be the right time to save the world & start making some babies. -Lethal

Killer Album: Dead Man's Bones

The first album released by Dead Man's Bones is self-titled and features The Silverlake Conservatory of Music Children's Choir in each of it's 12 tracks. If that alone doesn't convince you that this band is truly unique then maybe the recurring theme of zombies, ghosts, graveyards, & werewolves (both aurally & visually) will spark your interest. The story is that band members, Ryan Gosling & Zach Shields, crossed paths by default & began spending time together initially out of obligation more than anything else. This time together brought about the realization that both shared a fascination for death & the supernatural. The album itself, released in October of 2009, was the unexpected product of what started out as an idea for a theatrical love story centered around monsters and ghosts. Inspirations for the record were drawn from talented artists such as The Shangri-Las, The Cure, & The Misfits. This is quickly becoming one of my current obsessions. -Ash_Lethal

Repetitive Argument: Is Street Art Promoting Graffiti?

This debate is nothing new to those of us who are involved with and/or follow the street art scene. Graffiti and street art are both strong topics of conversation for those of us in Atlanta. This particular story is bigger than one city itself as it stems from an international art project known as The Living Walls. Artists from all over the world were participating in the conference which focused on transforming some of the more aesthetically depressing areas of Atlanta with remarkable murals. The official conference took place in the Eyedrum and patrons could walk through a maze of halls and rooms covered in wheat pasted posters, installation pieces, & more original murals. After the event proved to be an incredible success it also brought about more controversy when one of the murals created was vandalized by an outside graffiti artist. So the debate is still on as to whether or not street art promotes graffiti. Read the full article and you can decide for yourself. If you have opinions please feel free to share them as comments. Criminal Records In-Store Show: Fanfarlo

The earthy folk music of Fanfarlo seems to have been thoughtfully grown from a seedling planted in a rich "marching band meets motown" soil. The band is rooted in London but their sound is slowly branching out to all parts of the world. Similarities can be drawn between the elements of Fanfarlo and those of bands like Shout Out Louds, Bishop Allen, and Marching Band. We stopped by Criminal Records this weekend to check out their exclusive in-store performance.

Since the show left us wanting for more we were stoked to find out about a free download of the College Radio Sessions EP and the hit single I'm A Pilot from the Reservoir album.

This week's free song download comes from a band that was formed in Los Angeles and currently consists of ten (yes, ten!) members. Fool's Gold is bonded by cultural diversity with influences stemming from South African, Ethiopian, and Eritrean music as well as the lead singer being from Israel. It would be safe to say this is a lot like listening to The Drums or Vampire Weekend in Hebrew. The band is giving away free mp3 downloads of their single titled Surprise Hotel. 1.22.10: Imagine there's an underground music venue with no visible sign or telephone and it has the ability to admit 250 people. It's a Friday night in downtown Atlanta and with so many things to do you might also imagine that The Drunken Unicorn is the last place you'd see people packing into. Expect nothing less from a live show with a lineup that consists of artists O'Brother and All The Day Holiday.

We have been fans of O'Brother for a few years now but our highlight from this show is a live video of All The Day Holiday playing a song from their first full-length album. The band hails organically from Cincinnati and their sound is comparable to that of artists like Jimmy Eat World, Muse, and Death Cab for Cutie. This was our first time catching them live and we were completely blown away. You may find the footage is a little rocky at times but it captures these brilliant minds at work as well as their interactive chemistry onstage. All The Day Holiday has become one of our favorites instantly as they share some of our sources for inspiration; art, experience, and the wonderful mystery of life. This band is essentially all that they are inspired by in the way they create art and deliver it in the form of an unforgettable experience. These experiences are what help us to solve those wonderful mysteries of life.

Although Chris Piascik's drawings may seem simple and to the point, where he finds inspiration and his story are anything but. PB: What is one thing you learned in school that you wouldn't know had you not gotten a "formal" education?

CP: Hmm..just one thing?? I could probably write a book about it. I guess most of the things I learned could have been figured out over time/experience—but being in such close proximity to like-minded creatives causes you to learn and grow as an artist exponentially. It's actually hard to think about because I imagine what I knew before art school and it seems like a completely different time.
PB: Can you rattle off 5 of your favorite album covers that have influenced you most as an artist?
CP: Menomena - Friend or Foe, Danzig 1, The Shins - Chutes Too Narrow, The Misfits - Bullet, Green Day - Dookie
PB: How many tattoos do you have? Are they all as significant as the Sharpie on your forearm?
CP: Just 2—the other is a slightly modified Captain Harlock skull and crossbones. The Misfits re-appropriated it very early on and that is the main reason I got it. I have always been a huge Misfits fan. The crossbones also have little X's worked into the negative space as a quasi-stretch-edge tattoo. I generally don't like to use the term "straight edge" these days, however, I don't drink or smoke, etc. I'm just not militant about it–it's simply a personal choice.

Band of Horses, formerly known as Horses, was formed in Seattle, Washington in 2004. These woodsy gentlemen captured my attention with their unique folk-indie rock sound. They currently base their work out of Mt.Pleasant, South Carolina and have been on tour with their second album, Cease to Begin. We were lucky enough to catch their sold out show in Atlanta, Georgia at the Tabernacle.

All the stops were pulled out this past weekend at Whiskey Park for the Rising Icons Event presented by 944 Media. Grey Goose and Bud Light were among the group of sponsors and we were lucky enough to receive the VIP treatment complete with complimentary bottles and beer. A custom stage was built inside the venue for local rising stars Frank Bell, The Modern Society, and Trances Arc to perform. Lovely host J. Monroe dropped her single post show and DJ Rimby wrapped up the evening spinning some late night hits. Photos of the event were taken courtesy of Jonathan Echeverry and The Midnight Socialite.
